Genesis reunion: Phil Collins reveals he WILL play drums – ‘A problem we have to overcome’

Written by on March 10, 2020

PHIL COLLINS has revealed he will play the drums some of the time on the Genesis reunion.

The 69-year-old has suffered from nerve problems in his hands in recent years, which has made it hard for him to play the drums on his solo tours. But as the 2020 Genesis reunion tour was announced this morning, Collins confirmed he will perform using the instrument when he can. Speaking on Zoe Ball’s BBC Radio 2 show this morning, he said: “For me, it wasn’t a deal-breaker but it was something that was working and it was a problem that we had to overcome with me not playing.”

He added: “Although I’m going to be doing my best to play some bits on the tour. “So I’ve got to start really seriously thinking, but I have been working at what I’ve got to do and what songs to play on.” Collins then alluded to his croaky voice adding: “Excuse my voice because I’ve been a bit sick.”

The rocker’s son Nicholas has been playing the drums for him while he sings on recent tours. Collins said: “Tony and Mike both came to the shows at the Albert Hall and both were kinda taken at the way he kinda understood what was needed. “And he plays a bit like me when he wants to…but I’m one of his many influences, of course, being his dad. “And he plays like me and he has the same attitude as me, so that was a good starter.”

On the Genesis tour coming together, Mike Rutherford added: “I think it’s a natural moment actually.”

He added: “Phil’s been out on tour the last two years or so. “We’re all still good friends, we’re all still above grass and here we are.”

The Genesis reunion tour is called The Last Domino? and the trio will be joined by Nic Collins on the drums (while Phil hopes to play some songs) and the band’s long time bass player Daryl Stuermer.
